Match Results - Northern League Meeting Saturday 6th May 2006

The expectation and spirit within the team has never been as high. With a strong team to select from a win in the opening league fixture of the season was a high possibility. However unfortunately with the injury list growing prior to the match the team had to re-shuffled and key personnel in key positions were missing. This proved to be our downfall as we eventually came second in the match to Bolton by 8 points. Once again re-asserting the point that full team sheets are essential if you want to win matches.
The match started off with the usual strong start from the field with Kirsty Forsyth, Dave Steele, new signing Bethan Lishman and newly appointed team captain Carl Fletcher achieving some good distances in their throws and gaining some early high scoring points. Also before the track events started Laura Willey and Sharon Walls took away full points from the long jump giving the team a strong platform to build from.
The inclusion in the team of some of the National League Squad was evidence of the quality which they can give to the Northern League side. Key performances from Bethan Lishman, Shona MacPherson, Jennifer Meadows, Sharon Walls and another new signing Jackie Cooke provided the team with a clean sweep of first place points. However from the National League squad Michelle Sharrock gave a dazzling display in the Pole Vault pushing herself to a great height of 3.80m.
The track events started securely with opening maximum points from Danny Hind in the 400m Hurdles and Chris Bryant and Dan Kevan in the 800m. One of the highlights of the opening events was witnessing that athletics is really like riding a bike, you never forget with Trevor Painter turning back the years to run a competitive performance in the 400m Hurdles to only narrowly come 2nd.
The women’s 800m and the men’s 1500m handed senior debuts to two under 20 athletes Corrine Scott and Ben Hunt who both performed outstandingly. Both athletes may have had some nerves prior to their respective races but this did not show in their performances. Both ran without fear and within themselves to clock some impressive times and some highly placed finishes and gained some great experience from competing in a higher age group.
Strong performances from regular squad members Andrew Ormeshaw, Adrian Cawley, Tom Bolan-Ashworth, Tom O’Brian, Chris Bryant, Dan Kevan, Jo Baker, Debbie and Kathryn Culshaw ensured that the team kept in touch with Bolton at the top of the table. Also with more debut performances from Debbi Jukes, Dave and Diane Wall from Wigan Phoenix, John Forshaw and Mike Serra as well as a welcomed return of Mike O’Neill all contributed to the team's successful opening performance.
Then it came down to the relays. We were in touching distance of Bolton and ready to strike. We knew we had to win the relays and hoped other clubs did us a favour in beating Bolton. With full strong relay teams we knew it was possible. However sadly we narrowly missed out winning 3 out of the 4 relays, not without some quality performances. The men’s 4x400m squad underlined their dominance in the event by cruising to victory and Jennifer Meadows clocked an impressive relay split of 53.1sec to reduce a 70m deficit and win the race for the women.
All in all it was a pleasing performance. But the real plus from the day was the travelling support we had and the team spirit within the camp. Both myself and the Team Capitan commented on how pleasing it was to see everyone sitting together and cheering each other on, long may it continue. Hope you all enjoyed the match, be good. Danny
