Club Coaches

The following page tells you all about the coaches that we have here at the Harriers. We think you'll find that whatever event you wish to try, we have a coach that can help you!

Level 3 Coaches

Bob HALLIWELL (Shot, Discus & Hammer)

Bob (as is the case with most coaches) got involved when his daughter was competing many years ago. Her coach retired and since she is a thrower, Bob was asked if he would help out and take the throws group on. He started coaching alongside the then chief UK throws coach, Simon Nathan and worked with him for five successive seasons. He also got involved with the GB under 20's squads.

He has coached numerous throwers to good levels in the British ranks and works with both junior and senior athletes throughout the year. He is also a senior martial arts instructor with 30 years experience of this and a qualified weights coach.

Roger HOLMES (Shot & Discus)

Don MOSS (Sprints & Hurdles)

Coach (Don Moss) Don first got involved with athletics in 1975 when his son showed an interest in the sport. During this period he started to enjoy being involved and helping out with training sessions. Encouraged by Frank Crook he got involved with sprint coaching and travelled around the North of England learning about sprinting and athletics. He attended coaching clinics lead by the likes of Peter Warden (National AAA`s coach) Alan Moore and Phil Probbitt. Over the years Don has made many friends in the athletics world and has had many great years in athletics seeing youngsters progress - with some making it to International level - but mainly seeing them enjoy their achievements.

Although he has now been a coach for a number of years, Don still gets great pleasure out of coaching. Over the years he has coached many talented athletes, and the group he has at the moment are no different! He gets a real buzz out of helping them to realise their full potential - but most of all to enjoy what they are doing!

Trevor PAINTER (Sprints)

Trevor took up coaching in 2000, fundamentally to assist his partner Jenny Meadows. He has since gained a UK Athletics Level 3 Coaching award. He has travelled the world as coach to Jenny, following her progress. Apparently, he is also well respected by the Great Britain 4x400 metres relay team in the major role that he plays for them - as 'bag carrier' and motivator!!!

Julie E MEADOWS (Sprints & Endurance)

Julie first got involved in athletics when she was much younger. She regularly turned out for the Harriers and was a very keen athlete. This interest in athletics has always been there and, although she left athletics for a while, the interest was rekindled when her daughter began to show an interest in the sport and has ended up with Julie becoming a coach here.

She had no previous coaching experience when she came to the Harriers but got involved in 1998 when she began to help out with coaching youngsters in a Primary Group of Friday nights. Julie has since taken various coaching courses and now has a fine group of athletes of which she is very proud. They are a committed and enthusiastic (not to mention talented) bunch and she really enjoys coaching them.

Kath ORMESHER (Javelin)

Mike PALMER (High Jump)

As with a lot of coaches, Mike got involved by "helping out" when he came down out of the stands to help coach his son on the athletics track when his coach at the time "did a runnner"! This was way back in 1987 and he has been coaching at the Harriers ever since.

Initially, Mike coached out on the track where he met some exceptional youngsters - not necessarily all of them athletes. However, when the cold, wet and windy Wigan weather finally got the better of him, Mike moved indoors (in the warmth!) where he took up the role of high jump coach - this is the coaching role he has been in ever since. He can be found down at the arena on most Mondays and Wednesdays coaching many of the talented high jumpers currently in the club. On Wednesday evenings he also runs an hour-long coaching session for the "novices", when anyone can come along and give the high jump a try under his watchful eye. Mike has had the fortune to work with many talented athletes and has a good crop of jumpers at the moment.

When asked what motivates him he replied, "I don't know, maybe it's working with dedicated coaches like Don Moss, Norman Clark or my mentor John Howcroft - probably the best high jump coach there is; maybe it's watching youngsters grow into confident young men and women. I hope that I have helped them along the along in some small way - whether in athletics or even passing their driving test! Or maybe it's just the fun I have had with all the various characters I have met over all the years I've been involved with the Harriers."
